The development of Quay Quarter is bordered by Bridge, Alfred, Young and Loftus Streets, and spans 11,000 square metres. Designed by 3XN with BVN Architecture, this 49-storey office tower for AMP Capital at 50 Bridge Street was named the winner of an international design competition in September 2014.

Quay Quarter Sydney is a major redevelopment of two complete city blocks in the heart of the Sydney City CBD totalling over 150,000m² of floorspace. It includes the regeneration and adaptive re-use of the 1970’s 50 bridge Street tower, more than doubling its size, new mixed use podium, new residential buildings, a museum and the provision of a new boutique hotel.

BVN have developed the masterplan for the site, incorporating the various uses and creating a new integrated groundplane that greatly improves accessibility and connections between the city and the quay. The masterplan addresses all of the challenges of an extremely dense urban site, including building massing, overshadowing controls, view lines, vehicle movements, pedestrian movements, access points, area/usage distribution, commercial feasiblity and open public space. BVN worked closely with the landowner, the City of Sydney Council, Transport for NSW and other relevant stakeholders to iteratively develop, test, assess, revise and complete the masterplan the achieve the best possible outcome for the owner and the City."

"The design of the tower is made up of five multi-storey blocks, stacked on top of one another and rotating at different angles to enhance views towards the Opera House and the harbour and to help shield the building from the harsh sun. The lower volume is oriented west to capture the energy of the surrounding neighbourhood and engage in an open dialogue with the street."
